Jim Houle’s practice is concentrated in the areas of sophisticated estate planning, employee benefits, business succession planning and art law. He has represented noteworthy businesses, philanthropists and artists. Mr. Houle has been instrumental in the acquisition of prominent works of art by collectors and museums as well as other gifts to charities. He also has been an active advocate for developmentally disabled citizens of Maine, particularly with regard to housing needs and the establishment of state-wide special needs trusts. His written legal work has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Houle owned several businesses, including a real estate development business and a printing and graphic design firm.

Mr. Houle is a 1981 graduate of the University of Maine School of Law, and in 1984 earned his LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University School of Law. He received his B.A. cum laude in 1971 from Boston College and an M.F.A from the University of Massachusetts in 1976. He is a founding member and past president of the Maine Employee Benefits Council, and a member of the Maine Estate Planning Council, the American Bar Association and the Maine State Bar Associations. Mr. Houle is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Portland Museum of Art and Creative Work Systems, an organization that assists the developmentally disabled.
